Stay as long as you need to. There’s more juice in the fridge. Cheeto is my new cat. Call me when you’re up to it.
Molly
Amy sat down the note, and took two aspirin, forcing herself to drink the juice. Sugar helped a hangover.
“I don’t get your mommy. I thought she’d be mad.” She managed a bite of toast before she fell back asleep.
Chapter 19
Molly was starting to think she spent more time in her police car than in her office. In a small-town department, she wore a lot of hats, but this was getting out of hand. She would have to look at the schedule. She heard the voice over the radio and knew it was Doug. He had been on the force right out of the academy, just a year behind her. Another wreck out on the back highway. Single car. She reached over and flicked on her lights and floored the accelerator. She slid the car behind the other rescue vehicles, blocking the lane at an angle. She pulled on her reflective vest and adjusted the strap around her.
The car was sideways against a tree, the windshield blown out where a driver had exited the vehicle. Why couldn’t people wear a seat belt? It’s not that hard. She looked toward Doug. “Is a bus coming?”
Doug shook his head. “Yeah, but the coroner is coming too. Stupid kids dragging. If you see a brown G van pull up, that’s his dad. Stop him. It’s not pretty.”
“Roger that.” Molly scanned the scene, and the two rookie officers were already taking pictures and measuring tracks on the pavement. Not much else to do except wait for the coroner to call the death, and then finish the investigation. The tow truck was waiting to clear the wreckage from the scene, if possible, without civilian interference. “Hey, put up some tape. We don’t need the Courier photographer getting a nice grisly photo for his family to see in the paper.”
Her pager went off and she peered at the number. She walked back to her cruiser and flicked on the radio. “Dispatch, connect me to the Fire Chief.”
After an eternity, a voice came back. “He says the water rescue team is at the lake park. They got a floater. Been a while. They need a police report; should he call the sheriff?”
“No, I’m on my way.” Molly stepped out of her car. “Hey Doug, the coroner needs to head to the park beach when he’s done here. Tell him to dump his lunch box before he heads out. We have a floater.”
At the lake, it was obvious the body was dead; it must have been in the water for weeks. Molly canceled the coroner and headed back to the station. Not much could be done until an autopsy was completed.
In her office, she doodled on the pink message sheet. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck. Amy. 555-2932 It’s easy to give up drinking while your puking on the side of the road.
